The Closet

This is part of the June 2022 Pride poetry series.

  1. Locked up in my closet, where it’s dark and dim;
  2. There’s no way to get out—monsters keep me in:
  3. The monsters of rejection, eviction on a whim
  4. The monsters of religion, family, and kin.
  5. Then a sunbeam slithers underneath the door
  6. Eyes begin adjusting—I can finally see.
  7. Suddenly I realize there is something more
  8. Turning the cold doorknob, ready to be me.
