The Alberta Worker is an independent media outlet that focuses on labour and politics. It was founded in April 2020 by independent journalist Kim Siever.
Based in Lethbridge, Alberta, Kim Siever writes daily news stories, focusing on labour and politics and specializing in investigative journalism and critical analysis from a leftist political lens.
Kim’s writing experience
Kim Siever’s writing experience includes 3 years as editor-in-chief with Lethbridge News (2010–2013) and 3 years as a political correspondent with Elect Lethbridge (2010–2013), both of which were citizen journalism projects. Between 2014 and 2021, Kim had been part of the curation and live tweeting team at YQL Vote, a grassroots collective devoted to politics that affect Lethbridgians. He was the main writer for LDSCaNews in 2000 and 2001, a writer for his high school newspaper, and on the editorial team for his junior high newspaper.
Kim has been a freelance writer for commercial clients since 2013. Prior to that, they worked as a communications specialist for a private company.
He has been a guest speaker at both the University of Lethbridge and Lethbridge College in management and social work classes, discussing entrepreneurship, communication, and building community. He spoke at Olds College on his journey toward becoming a radical left queer Mormon.
Kim has been hired by several unions (including CUPE and PSAC) to speak at their events. They were a presenter at Parkland Institute’s annual conference in 2024 to speak about public sector bargaining in Alberta.
Kim’s political experience
Kim Siever ran for a seat on city council in 2001. There were 6 mayoral candidates and 35 councillor candidates, the largest slate in Lethbridge’s history. They managed to garner just under 1,000 votes, despite being relatively unknown and having yet to have built out their social network.
He ran as an independent candidate in the Lethbridge riding during the 2021 Canadian federal election. He placed 5th out of 6 candidates in the Lethbridge race but 7th out of 91 independent candidates across the country.
Kim’s personal life
Kim Siever lives in Lethbridge with their spouse and 4 of their 6 children. They have a bachelor’s degree in drama and French. They have completed some coursework toward a second undergraduate degree, in political economy. They grew up in Regina, but graduated from high school in Abbotsford. They started married life in Surrey and moved to Lethbridge in 1998.
He has volunteered on over two dozen boards, committees, and assemblies. Since 2023, he has been the president of OUTreach Southern Alberta, a Lethbridge-based charity focused on advocacy, education, and support for and on behalf of the local 2SLGBTQIA+ community.
