Union wants to grow its members

The current group of workers has been unionized since 2021.

Last week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board published their final new applications report of February 2026.

One of the applications was to expand the number of workers included in a bargaining unit.

The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees filed the application on 18 February 2026 regarding the workers they represent who are employed by Carewest.

The employer is the largest public care provider in Calgary. Their workers operate 14 locations throughout the city that offer long-term care, mental health care, alternate level of care, rehabilitation and recovery services, and community programmes and services.

This application, however, is not regarding these careworkers and programme administrators.

In July 2021, the Alberta Labour Relations Board certified the unionization of all clerical workers employed by Carewest. When these workers ratified their most recent collective agreement in November 2023, they numbered fewer than 10.

On a tangential note, that collective agreement expired in October 2024.

In their application last month, AUPE requested that they be able to expand their bargaining unit to include all the workers at Carewest administrative offices, not just the clerical workers.

The labour board has not published when they plan to hold a hearing regarding this application.

Because the ALRB does not archive their new application reports, I have included a copy of last week’s report below for your convenience.
