Saskatchewan MP hiring nanny for basically min. wage

The husband of the MP for Battlefords–Lloydminster recently posted a job ad for a nanny, offering 19¢ more than minimum wage.

Just before Christmas, a job posting appeared on the Government of Canada job bank. The person posting the job was looking for a nanny for what appears to be 3 children.

The location of the posting was Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, and the name of the poster was Adam Falk.

In the job posting, under the “Children’s Ages” section was listed the following:

  • Toddler to pre-school (1–3 years)
  • School age (6–12 years)
  • Kindergarten age (4–5 years)

This seems to imply that the nanny would be caring for 3 children.

Interestingly, the MP for Lloydminster, Rosemarie Falk, has a husband named Adam, and they have 3 children. Plus the contact email address includes the same username as the Twitter account for Rosemarie’s husband.

Although the posting indicates that no education is required and that applicants don’t even need to have experience being a nanny, it lists several required skills for the position:

  • Tend to emotional well-being of children
  • Supervise and care for children
  • Sterilize bottles, prepare formulas and change diapers for infants
  • Prepare and serve nutritious meals
  • Organize, activities such as games and outings for children
  • Instruct children in personal hygiene and social development
  • Discipline children according to the methods requested by the parents
  • Bathe, dress and feed infants and children
  • Prepare infants and children for rest periods
  • Help children with homework

It then goes on to list “additional skills”:

  • Wash, iron and press clothing and household linens
  • Travel with family on trips and assist with child supervision and housekeeping duties
  • Perform light housekeeping and cleaning duties
  • Care for pets
  • Assume full responsibility for household in absence of parents

Falk also indicated that he wants the applicants to have a first aid certificate, a CPR certificate, and “emergency child care first aid and CPR”. Plus, he expects the nanny to undergo a child welfare check, a driving record check, a Criminal Record check, and a vulnerable sector check.

The nanny would be expected to provide their own transportation, which will need to be a vehicle, given that they live in a rural area without public transportation.

The posting indicates that space could be provided in the home for the nanny’s accommodation at no extra charge, but being a live-in caregiver is not a condition of employment.

Falk indicates at the beginning of the posting that the position is “part time leading to full time”, with a workweek of between 20 and 40 hours a week. However, later in the posting, he indicates that overtime will be required.

And the wage for this position? $12 an hour.

According the the Government of Canada job bank, the median wage for a home child care provider in the region is $14 an hour, with a low of $11.81 an hour—the province’s minimum wage—and a high of $19.33 an hour. The wage is similar throughout the province.

Ironically, Rosemarie Falk, during the 2019 election, claimed that an Andrew Scheer government would put more money into people’s pocket. You know what else puts more money into people’s pockets? Paying them more than minimum wage.

According to the Parliament of Canada website, Rosemarie Falk makes $185,800 a year as an MP.

14.00 per hour is more than mothers make. The nanny probably can ask for that princely wage because of all her extra qualifications – first aid training, etc. Actually,the MP is going through a typical first step before applying for a temporary foreign worker- ask for Highly trained, highly skilled individuals and promise to pay peanuts. Then you can say there is no Canadian for the job. Then you get your foreign worker, maybe a teacher or a trained nurse from the Philippines, for example- draining the talent who hope to become Canadian citizens and sponsor their own children or siblings to move here. The ad is a simple pretext to earn the right to apply for a cheaper desperate person from another country.

I believe that Mary Poppins is already taken, and her terms of employment do not include making the family’s meals, doing the family’s laundry, other housekeeping, taking care of pets, tutoring and sole responsibility for three children on a wage of $12 an hour. Will Mary’s super-nanny clone/surrogate parent be paid for 20 hours a week while working 40+ hours? Accommodation is free, but will food be deducted from wages? Is there a charge for the nanny’s personal laundry? Will the nanny be expected to use her own vehicle and pay the appropriate insurance for transporting children at work (is this why she needs a driver’s abstract)? How many infants, because this is plural, and are these in addition to the children listed? Will wages during family vacations be paid for 24 hours a day? Is there a maximum number of hours per day? Will the nanny be able to choose her own hours, given that this is a part-time position that will require a second job in order to pay off-site living expenses? So many questions. And car expenses. And fees for all the security clearances and first aid programs. And Lloydminster.

Nannies do not get paid enough or get nearly enough respect, obviously.
