Alberta’s lieutenant governor approved last week an appendix to the Alberta Senate Election Act, which could lead to grants being available during senate elections.
If the minister of municipal affairs chooses to issue grants, they would be provided to help elected authorities or other bodies facilitate the voting of a senate election.
If an election is required under the Local Authorities Election Act in a municipality or ward, the organization conducting the vote can be paid a grant of $1,000 or $1 per capita, whichever is greater. If the election isn’t required under the LAEA, the organization could receive double that amount for their grant.
For Métis settlements, the grant would be $2 per capita or $2,000, whichever is greater.
