The Alberta Labour Relations Board publishes a list of all the certificates they’ve issued for unionized workplaces in the province.
They update it every month, with the latest update being 3 February 2025.
I thought I’d report on 9 certificates that the ALRB awarded in January 2025.
AB Abducted At The Football Game Productions
The first certificate that the ALRB issued last month was for workers employed by AB Abducted At The Football Game Productions ULC, a film production company.
This certificate specifically covers those working as drivers and caterers.
These workers will be represented by Local 363 of the General Teamsters, who received the certificate on 8 January 2025. They had filed their application a little more than a month before, on 5 December 2024, for 10 workers.
WC Operating (Alberta-2) LP
The ALRB issued the second certificate the next day for was for 90 workers employed at Inglewood, a seniors facility in Red Deer with independent living, assisted living ,and short-term care options.
The active certificates table lists WC Operating (Alberta-2) LP as the employer; although Optima Living, a private seniors care company out of British Columbia, has the Inglewood facility listed on their website.
These workers applied for union certification last July, and they will be represented by Local 417 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
TransEd O&M Partners
The following day, on the 10th, transit workers employed with TransEd O&M Partners General Partnership received their certificate from the ALRB.
I’m not sure when the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference filed the certification application, but I do know that Local 569 of the Amalgamated Transit Union filed a similar application last June and were certified in December.
ATU specifically applied on behalf of transit controllers and train crew supervisors working for TransEd, which were around a dozen, while TCRC applied for all the other workers.
Compass Group Canada Ltd. and Bloom Limited Partnership
The ALRB issued two certificates for the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees on the 14th, the ALRB issued a certificate for workers employed at 3 continuing care centres in Edmonton: Jasper Place, Miller Crossing, and South Terrace.
The workers are employed by two companies: Compass Group Canada Ltd. and Bloom Limited Partnership.
I don’t have information on when AUPE applied for these certifications.
Homeland Housing
Next up was Local 2832 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, which also received their certificate on the 14th.
They had applied on behalf of workers employed by Homeland Housing at two locations in Westlock and one in Gibbons.
The two Westlock locations are Pembina Lodge, a 68-space assisted living facility, and Smithfield Lodge, a 44-space continuing care facility. The Gibbons location is a 42-space continuing care facility called Spruce View Manor.
This certificate is for all workers employed at these 3 locations.
I have no information on when CUPE applied for this certificate.
Sherwood Park Fish & Game Association
The next workplace to receive a union certificate was the Sherwood Park Fish & Game Association, which received theirs on the 17th.
The certificate will apply to all workers employed by the non-profit recreation and conservation organization, which manages 720 acres of wildland that contain several gun ranges, an archery range, a fish pond, a clubhouse, a campground, and several trails.
These 5 workers will be represented by Local 1007 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, who applied for the certificate in November 2024.
The final two workplaces to receive certificates from the ALRB got them on the 29th.
Yarrow Limited Partnership
First up was Local 3000 of the Labourers’ International Union of North America, also known as LiUNA. They had applied in December union certification to represent 65 workers in Morinville.
These workers were employed by Optima Living at Aspen House, their 72-space continuing care facility in the community. The employer is listed in the certificate, however, as Yarrow Limited Partnership.
They might have been certified earlier if not for an accusation from Local 3000 that the employer was engaging in unionbusting.
Wayfinder Corp.
And last, but not least, was Local 362 of the Teamsters again. This was probably the quickest approval in January, with the workers applying just two days before Christmas, and being approved a little over a month later.
The Teamsters will be representing 38 workers employed by Wayfinder Corp. at their Big Molly regional sand facility, which is about 100 kilometres northwest of Edmonton. Not included in the certificate are those working in office and clerical.
