Earlier this month, the federal government announced that it would helping fund 61 infrastructure projects in Alberta.
The projects include transportation, recreation, healthcare, and municipal infrastructure, and will receive a combined investment of over $91 million.
Nearly 30 municipalities throughout the province, including 2 counties and a specialized municipality, will receive the funding. Mid-sized communities will receive the bulk of the funding.
Medicine Hat, for example, will receive funding for 12 projects, Lethbridge for 9, Red Deer for 8, St. Albert for 7, and Strathcona County for 6.
Combined, these projects will account for nearly $55 million of the federal funding announced.
Speaking of federal funding, of the $92.2 million in funding highlighted in the announcement, $73.8 million (or 80%) of it will be provided by the federal government through the COVID-19 Resilience Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada plan.
Municipal governments will be providing about $18.4 million.
According to the announcement’s backgrounder, the provincial government isn’t providing any funding. To be fair, it also stated:
Provincial contributions for the Remote/Rural Upgrade Initiatives Bundle 9 project, the Nurse Call Systems Upgrades Bundle 1 project, and the Building Envelope Repairs Bundle 4 project are pending Alberta government approval.
Those are also the only projects that the municipal government won’t be contributing funds to.
