The stocks owned by Alberta MLAs (2025 edition)

Almost 5 years ago, I wrote an article about the Alberta MLAs who own stocks. Since we’ve had a change in the premiership, a provincial election, and several byelections since then, I figured it was probably time I updated that list.

As a result, I browsed the public disclosure statements of all 87 MLAs (well, 86, as one is currently vacant) to check.

Because investment funds buy and sell shares in companies all the time, it seems pointless to list the companies present in funds that MLAs have investments in, so I’ve left mutual funds, GICs, RRSPs, locked-in retirement accounts, and the like off these lists, listing only companies they directly invest in. I also haven’t listed stocks that are held in blind trusts.

The following information is as of December 2023.

I found 14 MLAs who declared owning “publicly traded securities”.

The most popular company to hold stocks in was TD Bank, with 4 of the MLAs holding stock in them. The next most common were Apple, Enbridge, and Tourmaline, each of which had 5 MLA investors. A significant number of companies had shares owned by 2 MLAs: Alphabet, Bank of Nova Scotia, Baytex Energy Corp, BCE Inc, Canadian Natural Resources, Canadian Pacific Kansas City, Cenovus, CVS, Dollarama, Enerplus Corp, Johnson & Johnson, Microsoft, Novo-Nordisk, Nutrien, Pembina Pipeline Corp, RBC, Suncor Energy, United Health Group, and Walt Disney Co.

All other companies listed below had only 1 MLA investing in them.

Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk

Armstrong-Homeniuk is the MLA for Fort Saskatchewan–Vegreville. Through herself and her spouse, she owns shares in the following companies:

Diana Batten

Batten is the MLA for Calgary-Acadia. Through herself and her spouse, she owns shares in the following companies:

• Clean Harbors Inc.
• Canadian Natural Resources
• Dirtt Environmental Solutions
• Nutrien
• Tourmaline Oil Corp

Shane Getson

Getson is the MLA for Lac Ste. Anne–Parkland. He has investments in the following company.

• Enbridge

Samir Kayande

Kayande is the MLA for Calgary-Elbow. He has investments in the following companies.

He also listed investment funds, so it’s possible some (or all) of these companies are listed in those funds, rather than being direct investments. However, she did have these companies listed separately, so I’m including them here.

Jackie Lovely

Lovely is the MLA for Camrose. She has investments in the following companies.

She also listed investment funds, so it’s possible some (or all) of these companies are listed in those funds, rather than being direct investments. However, she did have these companies listed separately, so I’m including them here.

Myles McDougall

McDougall is the MLA for Calgary-Fish Creek. He has investments in the following companies through himself and his spouse.

Luanne Metz

Metz is the MLA for Calgary-Varsity. She has investments in the following companies through herself and her professional corporation.

She also listed investment funds, so it’s possible some (or all) of these companies are listed in those funds, rather than being direct investments. However, she did have these companies listed separately, so I’m including them here.

Chelsae Petrovic

Chelsae Petrovic is the MLA for Livingstone-Macleod. She has investments in the following companies through herself and her spouse.

Garth Rowswell

Garth Rowswell is the MLA for Vermilion-Lloydminster-Wainwright. He has investments in the following companies through himself and his spouse.

Danielle Smith

Danielle Smith is the MLA for Brooks-Medicine Hat. She has investments in the following companies through her spouse.

Jason Stephan

Jason Stephan is the MLA for Red Deer-South. He has investments in the following companies through himself and his spouse.

Heather Sweet

Heather Sweet is the MLA for Edmonton-Manning. She has investments in the following companies.

• Loblaw Companies Ltd.

She also listed investment funds, so it’s possible this company is listed in those funds, rather than being a direct investment. However, she did have this company listed separately, so I’m including it here.

Tany Yao

Tany Yao is the MLA for Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo. He has investments in the following companies.

• Nexgen Energy
• Novo-Nordisk
• United Airlines

He also listed investment funds, so it’s possible some (or all) of these companies are listed in those funds, rather than being direct investments. However, he did have these companies listed separately, so I’m including them here.

Remember, this doesn’t mean no other MLAs own shares in companies. Most of the other MLAs are money tied up investment funds, which pool shares in multiple companies, but, as I said, which companies are in the pool can fluctuate. As well, some MLAs stated that they have investments managed by a trust that has been approved by the ethics commissioner.

These are only the companies that have been explicitly declared in the public disclosure documents.
