I was curious to know which Alberta MLAs own stocks and which stocks they own. I decided to spend a couple of days browsing their public disclosure statements to check.
Because investment funds buy and sell shares in companies all the time, it seems pointless to list the companies present in funds that MLAs have investments in, so I’ve left investment funds off these lists, listing only companies they directly invest in. I also left off RRSPs for the same reason. Nor have I listed stocks that are held in blind trusts.
I found 18 MLAs who declared owning “publicly traded securities”.
The most popular company to hold stocks in was TD Bank, with 7 of the MLAs holding stock in them. The next most common were BCE, Enbridge, and Suncor, each of which had 5 MLA investors. Apple, Manulife, Microsoft, TC Energy, and Telus all came in third most popular, with four 4 MLAs each. The next most popular stocks were Berkshire Hathaway, Bank of Montreal, Bank of Nova Scotia, Canadian Natural Resources, CIBC, Johnson & Johnson, and Sunlife, all having investments from 3 MLAs. Finally, Brookfield Asset Management, Costco, Facebook, Fortis, McDonalds, RBC, and Verizon all had 2 investors each.
All other companies listed below had only 1 MLA investing in them.
