Sobeys wants wage freezes for 7,500+ workers
Over 7,500 workers employed in Alberta at Safeway stores, which are owned by Sobeys, will see their current contract expire next year. And their employer is being stingy on wages.
The workers at Marmot Basin had voted 100% to unionize their workplace, nearly a year after filing to certify.
One community lost their ER for nearly 300 hours.
That’s over 3 years and less than they got in their previous contract.
If they’re successful, they’d be joining HVAC workers at the same company, who unionized last year.
This comes after 8 years of wage freezes under the PC, NDP, and UCP governments.
If successful, these 150 or so workers will join their peers at Casino Calgary by becoming the second unionized casino owned by this employer.
The workers will also get increases in dental and vision care and improvements in life insurance and retirement benefits.
If successful, the 5 workers who run the organization and manage the 720 acre property would unionize with IBEW.
And yet Alberta still had the fourth largest unemployment rate in the country.
