The Alberta Labour Relations Board publishes a list of all the certificates they’ve issued for unionized workplaces in the province.
They update it every month, with the latest update being 2 July 2025.
I thought I would report on 4 certificates that the ALRB awarded in June 2025. I know that the headline says 3, but two of the certificates are for the same employers but two different groups of workers.
Whitehorn Village
The ALRB issued their first June 2025 certificate on the 5th for workers employed at the Whitehorn Village Retirement Community.
The certificate covers all those working in general support services at the 53-unit facility in northeast Calgary. The employer is 589184 Alberta Ltd.; although they also go by Origin Active Lifestyle, LLC.
These workers—which include such positions as food services, housekeeping, maintenance, rehabilitation, resident suport, and admin support—will be represented by The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.
They join the licensed practical nurses and health care aides employed at Whitehorn, who joined AUPE back in 2023 despite unionbusting by the employer.
Northern Lights School Division
The second certificate that the ALRB issued last month was actually two certificates at the same location: Northern Lights School Division.
The two certificates are for those employed by the Northern Lights School Division and both were issued on the 9th.
Custodial workers employed by the school division will be represented by Local 1098 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
Teachers employed by the school division will be represented by the Alberta Teachers’ Association.
Back in the spring, over 400 education support workers in this school division—including clerical workers, educational assistants, library workers, and other specialists—voted in favour of unionizing. The ALRB issued their certificate in May, and they are represented by Local 2559 of CUPE.
Based out of Bonnyville, this school division oversees nearly 30 elementary, middle, and high schools in Ardmore, Bonnyville, Caslan, Cold Lake, Glendon, Iron River, Kikino, Lac La Biche, Pamodon, and Wandering River.
Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority
Speaking of Bonnyville, the very next day, on the 10th, workers employed with the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority received their certificate from the ALRB.
I am not sure when the workers filed the certification application, but they filed it specifically for all 9-1-1 communicators with the regional authority.
They will be represented by the Health Sciences Association of Alberta.
Ambulance attendants employed by the Bonnyville Regional Fire Authority have been unionized with HSAA since 2014.
