The Alberta Labour Relations Board publishes a list of all the certificates they’ve issued for unionized workplaces in the province.
They update it every month, with the latest update being 2 September 2025.
I thought I would report on 12 certificates that the ALRB awarded in August 2025.
2371281 Investment LP
The ALRB issued their first August 2025 certificate on the 14th for workers employed at Shasta Care Community.
The certificate covers all those working for 2371281 Investment LP, a subsidiary of Sienna Senior Living Inc., according to their 2024 annual report.
Based out of Ontario, Sienna owns senior residences in BC, Ontario, and Alberta, including Shasta Care Community, a 162-unit continuing care centre in Edmonton, where these workers are employed.
The roughly 200 workers will be represented by The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, who filed for unionization back in July.
Calgary Chinese Elderly Citizens’ Association
ALRB issued the next certificate on the 18th for all those employed by the Calgary Chinese Elderly Citizens’ Association.
Based in downtown Calgary, the non-profit organization has been providing services and programmes to Chinese older adults since 1985. They have over 2,000 members.
Local 4731 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees filed for union certification during the last week of July for the two dozen or so workers employed by the non-profit.
Valleyview Library
ALRB awarded their next certificate on the 22nd to all those employed by the Town of Valleyview Library Board.
Back in April, Civic Service Union 52 filed a certification application for all those working at the town’s public library.
There was a delay in getting certified because both the union and the board disagreed with ALRB’s initial determination on which workers would be included in the bargaining unit.
If the name “Valleyview Municipal Library” sounds familiar, it is because it had found itself at the centre of the War on Wokeness launched by people on the political right who are infatuated with identity politics.
Veolia Waste Services Alberta Inc.
On the 26th, ALRB awarded a certificate to workers employed with Veolia Waste Services Alberta Inc.
Based out of Ontario, Veolia specializes in waste management and have operations throughout Canada. In this case, they manage the materials recycling facility for the City of Edmonton, which used to be operated by Suez Canada Waste Services.
It appears that this certificate was update to reflect the change in employer.
As when they were employed with Suez Canada Waste Services, these workers will continue to be represented by Local 362 of the General Teamsters.
Earlier this year, they ratified their current collective agreement.
Canada Packers Inc.
The ALRB issued two certificates on the 27th. The first was for workers employed by Canada Packers Inc. in Lethbridge.
Earlier this year, Maple Leaf Foods shareholders approved the company’s spinoff of their pig butchering operations into a separate corporation: Canada Packers Inc.
The Lethbridge facility was included in this spinoff.
Under Maple Leaf Foods, these workers were represented by Local 401 of the United Food and Commercial Workers Canada Union. The new certificate continues this relationship.
As before, they include all workers except those in office, clerical, or sales positions, as well as the chief engineer.
Foothills Alcohol Action Society
The second certification issued by the ALRB on the 27th was for all workers employed by Foothills Alcohol Action Society.
The non-profit runs The Foothills Centre, a medically supported adult detox facility located in Fort Macleod.
Workers at the facility will be represented by Local 408 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
Vertigo Theatre Society
The final union certification awarded by the labour board last month was given to workers employed by Vertigo Theatre Society.
Located in Calgary, Vertigo specializes in mystery theatre productions.
In June, about a half dozen of their workers applied for union certification from the ALRB.
The certification will provide union coverage for all stage workers who are not already covered by other collective agreements.
These workers will be represented by Local 212 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts, also known as IATSE.
