The Alberta Labour Relations Board publishes a list of all the certificates they’ve issued for unionized workplaces in the province.
They update it every month, with the latest update being 1 August 2025.
I thought I would report on 12 certificates that the ALRB awarded in July 2025. I know that the headline says 9, but some of the certificates are for the same employer.
Taproot Community Support Services
The ALRB issued their first July 2025 certificate on the 2nd for workers employed by Taproot Community Support Services Ltd.
The certificate covers all those working for Taproot in Vegreville.
Based out of the Vancouver area, Taproot offers support services for individuals and families. They have an office in Edmonton.
These workers will be represented by Local 1099 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
Aecon Civil Construction
The second certificate that the ALRB issued last month was actually 4 certificates for the the same employer: Aecon Civil Construction Corp.
ALRB issued the 4 certificates on the 3rd for those employed as “all general construction employees”, “roadbuilding and heavy construction labourers”, “roadbuilding and heavy construction carpenters”, and “roadbuilding and heavy construction operating engineers”.
According to the ALRB, the workers will be represented by Local 63 of the Christian Labour Association of Canada.
Telus
On the 15th, workers employed with Telus Security and Automation Inc. received their certificate from the ALRB.
The workers filed for union certification specifically for all workers at the employer’s Calgary call centre except for office personnel.
They will be represented by Local 1944 of the United Steelworkers, formerly the Telecommunications Workers Union.
SMS Equipment
The next day, on the 16th, ALRB awarded a certificate to workers employed with SMS Equipment Inc.
SMS Equipment is based out of Acheson, Alberta, but has locations throughout Canada (and two in Alaska). The company is a heavy equipment dealership, specializing in equipment for the construction, forestry, and mining industries, including oil and gas.
Back in June, Unifor filed a certification application for all those working at the Suncor Base Mine; all those working in or out of the SMS’s location off of Highway 63; and all those working in or out of any location in Ward One of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, including any business parks adjacent to Ward One.
The union has represented SMS Equipment workers since receiving a certificate in 2014. That certificate applies to just workers “at Fort McMurray locations except office, clerical and sales personnel”. This new certificate expands union coverage for SMS workers.
Both certificates exclude “office, clerical and sales personnel”.
These workers will be represented by Local 707-A of Unifor.
Edge Craft Industries
On the following day (17th), ALRB awarded a certificate to workers employed with Edge Craft Industries Inc.
Based out of Calgary, Edge Craft Industries is a brand new building supplies company, having incorporated just last year.
This application will apply to all general construction carpenters employed by Edge Craft.
They will be represented by Local 2103 of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.
2371281 Investment LP
Also on the 17th, Fort Saskatchewan workers employed with 2371281 Investment LP received a certification from the ALRB.
Also known as 2371281 Ontario Limited, this company is a subsidiary of Sienna Senior Living Inc.
Based out of Ontario, Sienna owns senior residences in BC, Ontario, and Alberta, including Fort Saskatchewan Care Community, a 126-suite continuing care facility in, well, Fort Saskatchewan.
Workers there applied to the ALRB back in June for union certification for the 125 or so workers employed at the Fort Saskatchewan facility.
They will be represented by Local 92 of the Labourers’ International Union of North America, also known as the Construction and General Workers’ Union or just LiUNA.
But wait, there is more.
About a week and a half later (on the 29th), workers employed at the company’s Airdrie Care Community also received a union certification from the ALRB
The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees applied last month for certification on behalf of workers employed at the 126-suite continuing care facility in Airdrie. This would include about 130 workers.
These workers, of course, will be represented by AUPE.
Prairie Bus Lines Ltd.
As July drew to a close, the ALRB issued a certification for workers employed by Prairie Bus Lines Ltd.
The employer is based out of Red Deer County and provides charter, employee, and student transportation services.
Workers covered by this new certification will be all those working out of the communities of Ponoka and Wetaskiwin.
They will be represented by Local 362 of the Teamsters.
Vipond Fire Protection
The final union certification awarded by the labour board last month was given to workers employed by Vipond Fire Protection Inc.
Based out of Ontario, Vipond has locations throughout Canada, including 3 in Alberta. They specialize in fire detection, suppression, and fire sprinkler systems.
In June, workers at the company’s Calgary location applied for union certification from the ALRB.
The certification will provide union coverage for all those working at this location as fire alarm technicians except for maintenance and construction personnel. The application estimated the number of such workers at 7.
These workers will be represented by Local 496 of the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe Fitting Industry of the United States and Canada, also knowns as just UA
