Edmonton masons file for unionization

If the application is approved, these 9 workers will vote on whether to unionize.

Last week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board published their second new applications report for March 2023. In it was an application for union certification.

Local 222 of the Operative Plasterers’ and Cement Masons’ International Association of the United States and Canada, also known as OPCMIA, filed the application on 15 March.

Technically, they filed two applications: one was for “all non construction cement masons”, and the other was for “general construction cement masons”.

Either way, they applied for 9 workers employed by Certified Concrete Cutting and Coring Inc.

Certified Concrete is based out of Edmonton and provides various concrete-related services, including concrete coring, concrete cutting, asphalt cutting, concrete removal, asphalt removal, wall saw, curb coring, curb cutting, excavating, and hard demolition.

The ALRB has scheduled a hearing for tomorrow, during which time, the employer will have a chance to argue why they think these workers shouldn’t join Local 222.

If the ALRB approves application, these workers will get a chance to vote on whether to join Local 222. If they’re successful, then the next step would be to form a bargaining committee and begin contract negotiations.

Because the ALRB doesn’t archive their new applications reports, I’ve included a copy of this report below.
