Edmonton solar workers file for unionization

If these 6 workers are successful, they’ll join the Teamsters.

Last week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board published their first new applications report of March 2024. In it was an application for union certification.

Local 362 of the General Teamsters Union filed the application with the ALRB on the last day of February on behalf of workers employed with BayWa R.E. Solar Systems Inc.

A subsidiary of a Germany-based multinational company, BayWa R.E. Solar Systems Inc. is based out of Edmonton. They distribute photovoltaic products to commercial clients throughout Canada.

Local 362 hope to unionize all the workers employed in Edmonton by BayWa R.E., except those in office, clerical, sales, and supervisory roles.

If the ALRB approves the application, their next step will be to supervise a certification vote, during which time the 6 workers affected by this application will be able to choose whether to become members of Local 362.

If they’re successful, the workers will then proceed on to negotiating their first collective agreement with the employer.

The ALRB doesn’t archive their new applications reports, so I’ve included last week’s report below.
