Last week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board published their second new applications report for March 2026. In it was an application for union certification.
The International Association of Fire Fighters filed the application on 4 March 2026 in behalf of nearly 50 firefighters employed by the Town of High River.
Currently, these firefighters, like all the municipal workers in High River, are represented by the Town of High River Employee Association.
IAFF wants to move the firefighters out of that bargaining unit and into a separate one that they would represent.
This would not be the first time that IAFF has represented firefighters in a separate bargaining unit. This practice has already occurred in Airdrie, Calgary, Canmore, Chestermere, Cochrane, Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, Grande Prairie County, Leduc, Lethbridge, Lloydminster, Medicine Hat, Okotoks, Red Deer, Rocky View County, Spruce Grove, St. Albert, Strathcona County, and Wood Buffalo.
The ALRB has scheduled a hearing for later today regarding this application.
Because the ALRB does not archive their new application reports, I have included last week’s application below for your convenience.
