Red Deer painters file for unionization

If the ALRB approves the application, these 12 workers will get a chance to vote on whether to unionize.

Earlier this week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board published their new applications report. In it was an application for union certification.

Local 177 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades filed the application on 13 February 2024.

Technically, it was two applications: one was for all maintenance painters, and the other was for all construction painters. It’s the same workers, however; the union is just trying to cover all the bases.

The 12 painters Local 177 is trying to help unionize are all employed with Dalco Services Inc.

Based in the Red Deer area, Dalco provides lining, coating, and abrasive blasting solutions throughout Western Canada, particularly in the oil and gas, mining, and infrastructure sectors.

The ALRB has scheduled a hearing for later today, during which time, the employer will have an opportunity to present arguments for why the ALRB should’t approve the certification application.

If the ALRB does approve the application, the next step would be for the ALRB to hold a certification vote, which give the workers a chance to vote on whether to unionize, and specifically whether to join Local 177 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades.

The ALRB doesn’t archive their new applications reports, so I’ve included a copy below of this week’s report.
