Alberta construction workers trying to unionize

The more than 100 workers are employed at two companies, both of which are in energy construction.

Earlier this week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board released their most recent New Applications Report. In the report are 2 new application for union certification in Alberta.

The first application was filed on 2 February 2023 by Local 92 of the Construction and General Workers’ Union, also known as Local 92 Labourers.

This union is applying on behalf of all general construction labourers who work for CarbonBite Innovations Inc., which produces mulching equipment and installs solar power systems. They are based out of Red Deer.

According to the application, if the union certification is approved, it would apply to 55 employees working for CarbonBite Innovations Inc.

The ALRB has scheduled a hearing for this application to occur on 13 February 2022.

The second application was filed on 3 February 2023 by the Canadian Union of Skilled Workers.

This union is applying on behalf of all general construction employees who work for the Winnipeg-based Voltage Power Ltd., which specializes in constructing electrical distribution and substation infrastructure.

According to the application, if the union certification is approved, it would apply to all the employees working for Voltage Power throughout Alberta, which is currently 60.

The ALRB has scheduled a hearing for this application to occur on 17 February 2022.
