Alberta roofers trying to unionize

If they’re successful, it could lead to about 50 workers being represented by United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.

Last week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board published their first new applications report for July 2024. In it was an application for union certification.

Local 1325 of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America filed the application on behalf of general construction roofers employed by Flynn Canada Ltd.

Based out of Toronto, Flynn is the leading provider of total building envelope solutions in North America, with locations in both Calgary and Edmonton.

If the ALRB approves the application, they will conduct a certification vote, during which time the 47 roofers Local 1325 is trying to unionize will have a chance to vote on whether to join this union.

The ALRB has scheduled a hearing for tomorrow on this application. Representatives from Flynn will have a chance during this meeting to argue why they think the workers shouldn’t be able to join Local 1325.

Assuming ALRB approves the application and the workers vote in favour of unionizing with Local 1325, their next step will be to organize a bargaining committee to begin negotiating their first collective agreement.

Because the ALRB doesn’t archive their new application reports, I’ve included a copy of this report below.
