Alberta workers unionized 4 workplaces in Sep 2026

The certificates include art instructors, group home workers, landfill workers, and electrical workers.

The Alberta Labour Relations Board publishes a list of all the certificates they’ve issued for unionized workplaces in the province.

They update it every month, with the latest update being 1 October 2026.

I thought I would report on 4 certificates that the ALRB issued in September 2026.

1074867 Alberta Ltd.

The first certificate issued by the ALRB last month was for about 7 workers in Calgary.

The employer is 1074867 Alberta Ltd., also known as Kensington Art Supply, the largest locally-owned art supply store in Western Canada.

Local 401 of the United Food and Commercial Workers filed the certification application back in July 2026 for all workers at the company except those in office or clerical positions.

The ALRB approved the certification on 1 September 2026.

Environmental 360 Solutions Ltd.

Two days later, the labour board approved the certification of workers employed by Environmental 360 Solutions (Alberta) Ltd.

Based out of Ontario, Environmental 360 is an environmental management company that specializes in services to municipalities and commercial clients, including several municipalities in Alberta.

On 13 August 2026, Local 955 of the International Union of Operating Engineers filed a certification application for a dozen or so workers employed at the Leduc landfill.

Local 955 followed up this success with the launch of another unionization drive at the company’s Calahoo location in Sturgeon County.

ABB Industrial Solutions (Canada) Inc.

The next certificate issued by ALRB last month came on the 23rd.

It was for workers employed by ABB Industrial Solutions (Canada) Inc., which specializes in in electrification and automation of the industrial sectors, at the Apparatus Technical Services Centre in Edmonton.

These workers were already certified as a bargaining unit since March 2014; however, at the time, their employer was General Electric Canada Inc. and the union was Local 591 of Unifor.

Since then, General Electric sold its GE Industrial Solutions division, which included this worksite. And the local had switched to Local 21-A, still with Unifor though.

So this certification seems to merely be a formality to update the records to reflect the new employer and union local.

As before, this certificate includes all workers at this worksite except forepersons and those working in office positions.

According to the most recent collective agreement for these workers, the employer is also known as Integrated Power Services.

The Good Samaritan Society

The final certification came the next day when the ALRB approved workers employed by The Good Samaritan Society as a bargaining unit.

Good Samaritan Society, together with Good Samaritan Canada, provides care homes and programmes that serve over 7,000 individuals across Alberta and British Columbia.

The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees has represented workers employed by The Good Samaritan Society in their persons with developmental disabilities programme since 2005.

These more than 200 workers include team coordinators and community service workers at 22 group homes.

This application was to add workers at the Garneau Group Home to the bargaining unit. There was no indication in the active certificates report regarding how many Garneau workers are now unionized with AUPE.

The month before, workers at the Eastwood Group Home were certified as a bargaining unit.
