Last week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board published their third new applications report of August 2026, which covers applications they received between 9 August and 16 August.
One of those applications was for union certification.
Local 955 of the International Union of Operating Engineers filed the application on 13 August 2025 for workers employed by Environmental 360 Solutions Ltd.
Based out of Ontario, Environmental 360 is an environmental management company that specializes in services to municipalities and commercial clients, including several municipalities in Alberta.
This application is specifically for the dozen or so workers employed at the Leduc landfill.
To file a certification application in Alberta, unions must show support from 40% of the workers who would be in the proposed bargaining unit. In this case, that would be 5 workers.
Should the labour board approve the application, those 5 workers would need to convince 2 of their fellow workers to join with them, assuming the 5 of them follow through with their initial support.
Listed in the report as employee contacts are Jospeh Saunders, the manager of operations, for Alberta landfills, and Kyle Popeniuk, the company’s director of strategic initiatives.
If the ALRB approves the application and a majority of these workers vote in favour of unionization, one of their first orders of business will be to elect a bargaining committee to begin negotiating their fiest collective agreement.
