Calgary nurses file to unionize

If approved, 21 nurses will have a chance to vote on whether to unionize.

Earlier this week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board published their final new applications report for July 2024. In it was an application for union certification.

United Nurses of Alberta filed the application on 15 July 2024 on behalf of workers employed by Newport Harbour Care Centre Partnership in direct nursing care or nursing instruction.

The care centre located in northeast Calgary 127-room long-term care facility owned by the Vancouver-based Park Place Senior Living.

If the ALRB approves the application, they will supervise a certification vote, during which time, 21 nurses will choose whether to join the UNA.

Should these nurses vote in favour of unionizing, there next step will be to create a bargaining committee and begin negotiating a collective agreement.

Because the ALRB doesn’t archive their new application reports, I’ve included a copy of this report below.
