Concrete mixer drivers file for unionization

If successful, this would affect 6 workers based out of Medicine Hat.

Last week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board released their final New Applications Report of August. In the report is a new application for union certification in Alberta.

The application was filed on 21 August 2023 by Local 362 of the General Teamsters.

This union is applying on behalf of all mixer drivers employed by Burnco Rock Products Ltd.

Based out of Calgary, Burnco is a construction materials company that produces aggregates, paving asphalt, and ready mix concrete.

If the certification is successful, it will affect 6 workers stationed in the Medicine Hat location.

Local 362 already represents Burnco mixer drivers in Calgary, Lethbridge, and Red Deer, as well as shop workers in Calgary.

The ALRB has scheduled a hearing for this application for 6 September 2023. The employer will have an opportunity then to present arguments for why certification shouldn’t occur at that location.

If everything goes through, the next step will be to negotiate a first contract.

Since the ALRB doesn’t archive their new application reports, here’s a copy of this report.
