Didsbury workers file to unionize

This is the second attempt by CUPE Local 417 to unionize public sector workers this summer.

Earlier this week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board published their latest new applications report for September 2024. In it is an application for union certification.

Local 417 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees filed the application on 5 September 2024 on behalf of all employees (except firefighters) employed by the Town of Didsbury.

Currently, municipal workers in Didsbury aren’t unionized.

Local 417 already represents municipal workers in Blackfalds, Red Deer, Sundre, and Three Hills.

This follows an application filed by Local 417 earlier this summer, in which workers at a Red Deer retirement centre are hoping to unionize.

If the ALRB approves the application, they will organize a certification vote, during which time 59 municipal workers in Didsbury will get to democratically choose whether to unionize.

Should the certification vote succeed, the first step for these workers will be to organize a bargaining committee to begin negotiations with the Town of Didsbury.

Because the ALRB doesn’t archive their new application reports, I’ve included a copy of this week’s report below.
