Last week, the Mediation Services department of Alberta Jobs, Economy, and Trade published the August 2024 Bargaining Update.
This monthly report provides information about the unionized workforce, primarily in Alberta. Last month, Mediation Services received settlement information regarding 28 private sector and 9 public sector bargaining settlements, covering 2,361 and 1,857 workers respectively.
Among those settlements was a contract for 12 workers in Edmonton, who are employed by Tyco Integrated Fire & Security Canada, Inc., which provides fire and security system solutions to commercial clients.
The workers are represented by Local 424 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and include commercial installers and commercial service technicians.
Their previous contract, which had a two-year duration—expired back in May, but their new 3-years contract was settled just last month.
According to the bargaining update, these workers are set to receive wage increases in every year of the new contract.
| 30 June 2024 | 3.00% |
| 13 July 2025 | 3.00% |
| 12 July 2026 | 3.00% |
That works out to 9%—or 9.27% if you account for compound increases—over the life of the contract.
Here are some highlights of other changes between the previous contract and the new contract.
The safety glasses benefit will increase from $150 to $200, which allows workers to be reimbursed up to $200 once every two years for the cost of purchasing safety glasses required for their work.
The meal allowance benefit for workers having to stay overnight because of work will increases as follows:
| Old | New | |
|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | $14 | $15 |
| Lunch | $17 | $18 |
| Dinner | $24 | $27 |
