Edmonton long-term care workers file to unionize

If successful, about 75 workers would be represented by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees.

Last week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board published their first new applications report for June 2024. In it was an application for union certification.

The Alberta Union of Provincial Employees filed the application on 3 June 2024 on behalf of “auxiliary nursing care” workers employed by LeeCaring Communities Foundation.

The Edmonton-based employer operates two long-term care facilities in the city for up to 232 residents.

Previously known as Chinatown Multi-Level Care Foundation, the employer was founded in the 1980s to provide long-term care to elder Chinese people living in Edmonton. Last year, they opened a second facility for the broader population.

The ALRB has scheduled a hearing for today, during which time the employer will be able to argue why they think these workers shouldn’t be able to vote to join AUPE.

If the application is approved, the 75 workers employed by the foundation will choose whether to join AUPE in a vote supervised by the ALRB.

Assuming the workers vote in favour of unionizing, the next step following the vote will be to organize a bargaining committee to begin negotiation their first collective agreement with LeeCaring.

Because the ALRB doesn’t archive their new applications reports, I have included a copy of this report below for your convenience.
