Last week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board published their first new applications report for June 2024. In it was an application for union certification.
Local 362 of the General Teamsters filed the application on 4 June 2024 on behalf of workers employed by Cougar Fuels Ltd.
The Bonnyville-based employer operates several Petro-Canada branded facilities throughout northeastern Alberta, including commercial fueling centres and an indoor bulk lubricants warehouse. Their drivers provide door-to-door delivery service for gas, bulk fuels, lubricants, and industrial chemicals to their customers.
This application, however, is strictly for workers employed at the company’s sites in the Firebag River and Fort Hills areas. It excludes workers employed in office, clerical, and security roles.
The ALRB has scheduled a hearing for today, during which time the employer will be able to argue why they think these workers shouldn’t be able to vote to join AUPE.
If the application is approved, the 45 workers employed by the foundation will choose whether to join Local 362 in a vote supervised by the ALRB.
Assuming the workers vote in favour of unionizing, the next step following the vote will be to organize a bargaining committee to begin negotiation their first collective agreement with Cougar Fuels.
Because the ALRB doesn’t archive their new applications reports, I have included a copy of this report below for your convenience.
