Nisku boilermakers try to unionize

The 9 workers are employed with TIW Steel Platework Inc.

The Alberta Labour Relations Board published their first new applications report for September 2024 last week. It contained a new application for unionization.

The application was submitted on 28 August 2024 by Lodge 146 of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers, and Helpers, otherwise known as The Boilermakers. They’re applying for union certification for a group of 9 workers employed by TIW Steel Platework Inc.

Based out of Ontario, TIW provides multi-trade installation, maintenance, and repair services for field erected steel platework structures. They are part of the Canerector Inc. group of companies and have a location in Nisku, which is south of Edmonton and just east of the Edmonton International Airport.

The union is certifying for all the general construction boilermakers employed by TIW at their Nisku location.

The Alberta Labour Relations Board has scheduled a hearing for this application to take place later today. The employer will have a chance then to oppose the certification.

If there’s no opposition, then the next step would be for the ALRB to hold an election, where these workers can vote on whether to join the union.

Assuming the ALRB does hold a certification vote and a majority of the workers choose to unionize with Lodge 146, then their first order of business will be to organize a bargaining committee and begin negotiating their first contract.

Since the ALRB doesn’t archive their new application reports on their website, here’s a copy of the most recent one.
