Strathmore shelter workers try to unionize

The 24 workers are employed by the Wheatland Crisis Society.

Earlier this week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board released their most recent New Applications Report. In the report is a new application for union certification in Alberta.

The application was filed on 13 March 2023 by Local 4731 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.

This union is applying on behalf of all workers employed with Wheatland Crisis Society in Strathmore, which is currently 24.

Wheatland Crisis Society runs an emergency shelter programme in the community, as well as childcare, youth, and group programming for shelter residents, The society also offers community programming, including education, outreach, and support.

CUPE’s Local 4731 already represents workers employed at other shelters in Alberta.

The ALRB has scheduled a hearing for this application to occur on 29 March 2022.

Since the ALRB doesn’t archive their new application reports, here’s a copy of the most recent one.
