Earlier month, the Mediation Services department of Alberta Jobs, Economy, and Trade published the April 2025 Bargaining Update.
This monthly report provides information about the unionized workforce, primarily in Alberta. In April, Mediation Services received settlement information regarding 20 private sector and 19 public sector bargaining settlements, covering 990 and 43,727 workers respectively.
Among those settlements was a contract for about 10 workers employed by Telus Security Automation Inc, otherwise known as TSAI. These workers had previously been employed by ADT Security Services Canada, Inc.
This collective agreement covers all TSAI workers in Edmonton, as well as Alberta workers reporting to managers in Edmonton, other than those in office, clerical, professional, or sales positions or those working as alarm service investigators, relief supervisors, guards, or supervisors
The workers in this collective agreement help clean the University of Alberta in Edmonton. They’re represented by Local 2 of the Service Employees International Union.
Their previous contract expired in January 2025, and the workers ratified their new contract on 16 April 2025, about 2.5 months later. Unfortunately, this contract doesn’t appear to be retroactive to when the last one expired.
This contract runs until January 2027, so it is for less than two years. That’s less than what they had in their last contract, which ran for a little over 2 years: September 2022–January 2025.
This new collective agreement includes wage increases in every one of those two years.
| Ratification | 1.75% |
| 1 January 2026 | 2.00% |
That’s a combined 3.75%. This works out to an average of 1.88% per year.
Here are some highlights of things that have changed in this new contract.
The statement “An alphabetical rotation list shall be posted by the Company on at least an annual basis.” was removed from the article on working conditions.
The following clause:
Full time bargaining unit employees covered by this Agreement shall be entitled to the same benefits (medical, dental, disability and retirement) offered to the majority of non-bargaining unit full time employees employed by the Company in Canada subject to the terms, conditions and limitations contained therein. The Employer reserves the right to add, modify or terminate such plans at any time for bargaining unit members so long as it’s done simultaneously with the majority of non-bargaining unit employees.
was replaced with this:
Bargaining unit employees shall be entitled to benefits provided under the TELUS Team Flex Benefits for bargaining unit employees. The employer reserves the right to modify the plan at any time for bargaining unit members so long as it’s done simultaneously with the majority of the Company’s employees in Canada and subject to consultation as described in Article 12 (b)
Also, the time limit given to the employer for them to notify the union if they decide to change the benefits structure has been reduced from 90 days to 30 days.
The daily meal allowance for workers who have to travel for their assignments has been increased:
| Old | New | |
|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | $12 | $15 |
| Lunch | $15 | $20 |
| Dinner | $25 | $30 |
The shift differential for evening workers has been increased from $1.50 an hour to $2.00 an hour.
New to the collective agreement is a personal day off. Each worker who has been with the employer for at least 3 months will receive one personal day off per calendar year. This leave is separate from vacation time, and any unused personal leave will be paid out at the end of the year.
