Calgary shipping & receiving workers try to unionize

If approved, it would affect nearly 20 workers.

Last week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board released their second new applications report for May 2024. In it was an application for union certification.

Local 773 of Unifor filed the application on 10 May 2023 on behalf of all shipping and receiving workers employed by IG Machine & Fibres Ltd. at their facility in southeast Calgary.

The employer is also known as IKO Calgary, and the workers there manufacture roofing and building materials.

ALRB has scheduled a hearing for this application, which is set to occur on Monday (27th). During the hearing, the employer will have a chance to argue why they think the workers shouldn’t be able to join Local 773.

If the ALRB approves the application, they will organize a board-supervised certification vote. The 18 workers who would be affected by unionization will then get to vote on whether to unionize.

If the majority of the workers vote in favour of unionization, their next step will be to form a bargaining committee and begin negotiating their first contract.

Because the ALRB doesn’t archive their new applications reports, I’ve included a copy of this one below.
