CMHA Edmonton workers file to unionize

If the ALRB approves this application, nearly 150 workers will have a chance to vote on whether to unionize.

Last week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board released their second new applications report for May 2024. In it was an application for union certification.

Local 1099 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, filed the application on 10 May 2024 for all workers employed by the Canadian Mental Health Association at their Edmonton location.

Canadian Mental Health Association is a Canadian non-profit mental health organization that focuses on resources, programs and advocacy.

The workers at the Edmonton location provide a variety of programmes and services, including crisis lines, drop-in counselling, client advocacy, grief support, suicide intervention training, mental health first aid training, peer support, and housing.

The ALRB has scheduled a hearing for this application, which occur next week, on the 28th. During that time, CMHA Edmonton will have a chance to argue why they feel these workers should’t join Local 1099.

If the ALRB approves the application, the nearly 150 workers employed at CMHA’s Edmonton office will have a chance to vote on whether to unionize with Local 1099.

Should a majority of the workers participating in the certification vote choose to unionize, their next steps will be to form a bargaining committee to begin the process of negotiating their first contract.

Because the ALRB doesn’t archive their new applications reports, I’ve included a copy of this one below.
