Edmonton boilermakers apply for union certification

The 25 workers are employed with Lorneville Mechanical Contractors Ltd.

The last new applications report for January 2024 published last week on the Alberta Labour Relations Board website contained a new application for unionization.

The application was submitted on 25 January 2024 by Lodge 146 of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers, Iron Ship Builders, Blacksmiths, Forgers, and Helpers, otherwise known as The Boilermakers. They’re applying for union certification for a group of 25 workers employed by Lorneville Mechanical Contractors Ltd.

Based out of New Brunswick, Lorneville provides fabrication, maintenance, turnaround, construction, and specialty services in the petrochemical, power generation, pulp and paper, and mining and minerals sectors throughout Canada.

The union is certifying for all the maintenance boilermakers employed by Lorneville at their Edmonton location.

This unionization effort follows two other application this past November, one for 15 Lloydminster boilermakers employed with LML Industrial Contractors and the other for 6 Fort Saskatchewan boilermakers employed with Automated Fusion Inc.

The Alberta Labour Relations Board has scheduled a hearing for this application to take place on 8 February. The employer will have a chance then to oppose the certification.

If there is no opposition, then the next step would be for the ALRB to hold an election, where these workers can vote on whether to join the union.

Since the ALRB doesn’t archive their new application reports on their website, here’s a copy of the most recent one.
