Edmonton bricklayers file for union certification

If successful, it will apply to 5 workers. No workplace is too small to unionize.

Earlier this week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board released their latest new applications report. In it was an application for unionization.

Filed on 19 January 2024 by Local 1 of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers, the application indicates that the union wants to organize workers employed by Northcan Construction.

Based in Edmonton, Northcan is a general construction contractor providing a wide variety of construction services, including stone work, blockwork, brick, tuckpointing, glass block, and brick replacement.

If successful, the union certification will apply to all general construction masonry bricklayers employed by Northcan, which the application claims will be 5.

A hearing has been set for 5 February, when the labour relations board will hear arguments against the application to unionize. If the application is uncontested, the ALRB will supervise a certification vote of the members.

The ALRB doesn’t archive their new applications reports, so I’ve included a copy of this report below.
