Leduc County road workers file to unionize

This isn’t the first time this union has tried to organize municipal workers in the Leduc area.

Earlier this week, the Alberta Labor Relations Board published their first new applications report for May 2024. In it, was an application for union certification.

Local 362 of the General Teamsters filed the application on the 29th of April for all Leduc County workers employed in the road operations department, excluding all office, clerical, and security workers.

This isn’t the first time Local 362 has tried to unionize municipal workers in the Leduc area.

Last year, they filed to unionize 14 workers employed with Leduc Transit. The ALRB approved that application, a majority of workers voted in favour of unionizing, and the workers ratified their first agreement this past November, including a 3.8% pay raise upon ratification, a 3% increase this upcoming September, a 2.5% increase next September, and a 2.25% increase in September 2026.

The ALRB has scheduled a hearing for next Monday. Representatives from Leduc County will have an opportunity then to argue why they think these workers shouldn’t unionize with Local 362.

If the application is approved, then the next step will be for the alrb to conduct a vote, during which time the 29 workers will have a chance to choose whether to unionize.

If a majority of the workers vote in favor of unionizing, then they will have to organize a bargaining committee and begin negotiating their first collective agreement.

Because the alrb does not archive their new application reports, I have included a copy of this report below.
