Mount Royal instructors file for union certification

If they are successful, these 20 academic upgrading instructors will join the Mount Royal Staff Association.

Earlier this week, the Alberta Labour Relations Board published their last new applications report for November 2025. In it was an application for union certification.

The Mount Royal Staff Association submitted the application on 20 November 2025 on behalf of about 20 workers.

Currently, the MRSA represents all workers employed in general support services.

This includes supervisors, clerical personnel, research analysts, educational assistants, groundskeepers, library workers, computer technicians, parking staff, electricians, plumbers, program advisors, graphic designers, marketing consultants, buyers, and event planners, as well as those working in wellness, document services, maintenance, and customer service.

If their application is successful, MRSA would welcome all academic upgrading instructors into their bargaining unit.

The ALRB has scheduled a hearing regarding this application for later today, during which time, representatives from Mount Royal University can present their arguments, if they have any, as to why academic upgrading instructors should not join MRSA.

For a union to file for union certification, they must demonstrate support from at least 40% of the workers to represented by the proposed bargaining unit. In this case, that would be 8 workers.

Should the ALRB approve the application, they will hold a certification vote, and the academic upgrading instructors will have a chance to democratically choose on whether to join MRSA.

Assuming the (at least) 8 workers who expressed initial support for unionizing follow through and vote in favour of joining MRSA, they would need to convince just 3 more of their fellow workers to do the same.

Since the ALRB does not archive their new application reports, I have attached last week’s report below for your convenience.
