Local 5220 of the United Steelworkers is accusing AltaSteel of avoiding meeting with the workers’ bargaining committee to negotiate a new collective agreement.
They had originally asked for a 26% raise, given that they had seen a drop in real wages of 22% during their last two collective agreements.
Real wages for these workers are nearly 20% lower than they were back in 2017.
The workers have waited over a year for a new collective agreement from Sofina Foods, and rejected the first offer back in February.
